Elliott paid a visit to Andrew WK before soundcheck at his show at Irving Plaza in New York City on Friday to catch up and ask him some questions about life in general. This ended up being an entertaining and positive interview, yet awkward and funny at times.
When asked if it was hard to live up to the his positive persona, Andrew answered with “It’s really based on me trying to get cheered up. So it’s not a pressure even, it’s an opportunity, it’s a chance to feel a way that I probably wouldn’t otherwise get to feel. What we might call positive feelings have not come very easily to me. So this work, this mission, this party quest is a really beautiful gift that I’ve been given that allows me to feel better about life and hopefully feel that way with others as well.”
When Elliott asked Andrew if he could please run for president in 2020 he simply replied with “No thank you, but thanks for asking” with a smile.
With our current state of affairs in the United States, Elliott asked Andrew if he had any idea how we could unite in this country and he answered with the vibe of just trying to accept things as the way they are: “I think, yea, trying to be as thoughtful as possible, and kind, is a good start. But also accepting that there may never be this utopian unity and we should come to terms with that and courageously accept that. Because actually being able to tolerate imperfection, being able to accept, peacefully, frustrations with other people and yourself has the better hope, I think, of achieving peace rather than trying to force a type of idealized but unrealistic unity. The unity is that we can all be quite different and still exist at the same time and in the same place.”
Towards the end of the interview, Elliott asked Andrew what he thought of politicians and he spoke of almost kind of admiring their “kind of sociopathic kind of ambition and drive” and talked about how power naturally tempts people to bring out their lowest animal instincts.
