TORCHE on Space, Childhood, Karma and More

Elliott spent some quality time with Jon and Steve from Torche this past Friday evening at The Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie, New York to talk about everything from their new album “Admission” to karma, space, and childhood.

The band’s latest effort was just released on Friday by Relapse Records and they are currently on tour in the states in support of the new record. You can see if they are heading to your town here:

The conversation covered everything from their favorite 80’s bands to their favorite book, space, enjoying the outdoors, and music in general. One of the highlights of the interview was when Elliott asked them both what their favorite part of their childhood was. Steve responded with the following:
Well, it’s kind of like part of my adulthood because you have to have responsibilities. I hated having to go to school. But you know…I liked the excitement of when I was a kid and there were bands like KISS and when I first started playing guitar, I was just obsessed with just music. And I would do chores or, ya know, mow people’s yards and then get like five dollars. And I’d mow two yards and I’d go to the record store and buy a record like every week.

And Jon also chimed in with something similar:
“Same thing with Steve. I would literally, out of my lunch money, use as little as possible to buy lunch at school so that at the end of the week, I could go to a show, hopefully buy a CD or tape, ya know?

On the subject of the sound of their new album, Jon described his guitar-playing approach to the songs:
I like doing sounds on guitar that don’t necessarily sound like typical, blues scale solos. So…ya know, like a dinosaur flying through space, maybe with its tail on fire or something

And Steve chimed in with:
Screaming. Screaming guitars.
