Interview with Ken Casey of DROPKICK MURPHYS

Elliott Fullam caught up with Ken Casey of Dropkick Murphys at their recent show at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY to talk about the band’s latest record, politics and much more.

In the beginning of the interview, Casey talks about the meaning behind the band’s single “Who’ll Stand With Us?” and mentions the importance of speaking out:

“I think that anybody who is a real patriotic American needs to be willing to lend their voice to speak up against the attack on our democracy, the attack on our freedoms. The attack on everyday, normal Americans on behalf of enriching the wealthy and the powerful.”

Later on in the conversation, Casey responded with the following after Fullam asked him how he stays positive in such a politically divisive climate:

What Dropkick Murphys and what I say is nothing radical. It’s like ‘listen, we want to see people taken care of. We want to see power not be abused. We want to see people have basic human rights, healthcare, housing.’”

Casey also talked about his memories and experiences with the late Shane MacGowan of the Pogues and he had this to say about the sadness that he felt after his passing:

“Mental illness and alcoholism sometimes comes hand in hand with some of that. For me I’ve been sober for a long time since I was very young. And so as much as I admired and loved him, I always had this sadness that he was so enabled to continue to be like that. Like, the Pogues fans almost didn’t want to see him turn his life around. There was something about that character of ya know, the drunk Shane MacGowan. And I always had a little sadness about that in my love for Shane and The Pogues.”

The interview ended with a positive note before Fullam went in to his fun questions that he had for Casey:

“There’s a lot of good in the world, but it’s really being overshadowed. But I really think that a lot of this evil that’s out there has always been there. It’s just kinda coming to the light. And before big change, a lot of this has to come to light. And America, even in our better times has never really been the best, ya know? So I hold hope that the true ugliness that we see is like, maybe gonna lead to real, real change.”
